The National Transportation Safety Board encourages Texas to put seat belts on school buses

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) - Texas and five other states are in the National Transportation Safety Board cross-hairs as the agency moves toward more seat belts on school buses.

"We know that these lap belts help the students help these students during these impacts because it keeps the students within their compartment."

Today the agency recommended that Texas schools hand out flyers describing the alleged danger of riding in school buses without seat belts. But Tyler ISD's transportation director says school buses are designed for safety with out them.

"In buses equipped with seat belts, those seat belts have been removed and used as weapons in fights on the buses. So it's our contention that we have more fights than we do accidents."

Texas law does not require school buses to have seat belts. the NTSB stopped short of recommending a change to that law.
