Soldier Of The Month Engages Soldiers, Wins Gold Medal In Volleyball

(KCEN) -- Fort Hood's soldier of he month has a very important role on post.

Not only has she been quickly promoted in just two years, but she's using it to change a lot of lives, making a difference one smile at a time.

"Our upcoming business tomorrow is our pool party," Sergeant Sonya Legasi tells her team at a better opportunities for single soldiers (BOSS) program meeting.

As president of the program, Sonya greets every soldier who arrives at Fort Hood with a brief on all there is to do at this huge, new place.

"Our goal is to plan events and encourage all the single soldiers to get out of their barracks and get out and see the community that they're in," Sonya said.

She briefed Private First Class Demontray Williams when he first came to fort hood.

"I was one of those soldiers who sat in my barracks and played video games, and really didn't do anything," Williams said.

Now after much inspiration from Sonya, he's her vice president at the BOSS office.

He said, "It's a great thing that I ran into her, and she prepared me for my future in the Army."

And Sonya's much more than an intelligence collector who also engages her fellow soldiers.

She plays defense for the All-Army Women's Volleyball Team, which took home the gold against all other military branches in May.

She says it's just another chance to make a difference.

"Every morning I wake up, and it's a new day, have a positive attitude, because my attitude could change someone's attitude wherever I go, or whoever I encounter," Sonya said.

And there is a lot of opportunity for her to do that on Fort Hood. 200 to 300 soldiers move to the installation every week.

The BOSS program also rallies soldiers to get out and do community service.
