President Obama Speaks at Korean War 60th Anniversary Event

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- Today marks the 60th Anniversary of the end of the Korean War.

President Obama took part in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Korean War Memorial on the National Mall.

More than 36,000 Americans were killed in the 3-year conflict that ended with the signing of an armistice in 1953.

The president said U.S. veterans' sacrifices helped make south Korea a "bedrock of stability" in the region.

"When 50-million South Koreans live in freedom, a vibrant democracy, one of the world's most dynamic economies in stark contrast to the repression and poverty of the North, that is a victory, and that is your legacy."

Both South Korea and North Korea spent the day celebrating and honoring the anniversary.
