Update: Traffic flowing again on I-20 after 18-wheeler fire

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: Eastbound traffic is down to one lane on Interstate 20 after a 18-wheeler caught fire Monday night.

Fire crews were called to the intersection of I-20 and U.S. Highway 271 at 10:10 p.m.

Truck driver Robert Sa, a Brazil native, said he was driving a refrigerated trailer full of 39,000 pounds of Dannon yogurt when he noticed smoke from his truck.

Sa said he continued driving to the off ramp at U.S. 271 for the safety of the other drivers on the interstate. He said as long as he was driving forward, the smoke was safe but once he stopped, the wind would not keep it from his engine.

Firefighters on scene said the truck and trailer contents are destroyed and they had to put out a large grass fire.

No one was injured in the fire, but the eastbound lanes were closed because of heavy smoke.

Winona, Red Springs and Jackson Heights volunteer departments responded to the scene with the Texas Department of Public Safety.
