Health Alert: New recommendations for lung cancer screenings

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - A government task force is proposing new recommendations for lung cancer screenings.

The U.S. Preventive task force says older smokers who smoked a pack of cigarettes a day for 30 years or two packs a day for 15 years are at high risk for developing the disease. The task force says those people should get annual CT scans to find lung cancers early while they are still treatable.

The recommendations apply to current smokers and ones who quit within the last 15 years.

(CBS) - A new study finds digital 3- D imaging of the breast leads to fewer false positive results and helps give more accurate readings.

The screening is called tomosynthesis.

Researchers at Yale compared patients who had tomosynthesis together with mammography to women who just had a mammogram. They found women who had both types of screening were 30 percent less likely to be called back for additional imaging or biopsies.

Researchers say younger women and women with dense tissue benefited the most.

(CBS) - A new study links the duration of breastfeeding with higher intelligence.

Researchers at Boston Children's hospital tested the IQs of seven year olds whose mothers breastfed them as babies.

They found for every month the children were breastfed, their IQ rose about a-third of a point or about four points for a full year.
