Health Alert: Breastfeeding numbers increase

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - The Centers for Disease Control says nearly half of new mothers in the U.S. breastfeed their babies.

That's a 14 percent jump from the year 2000. CDC officials say it's good news because breastfed babies are less likely to develop diabetes and obesity later in life.

And mothers who breastfeed have a lower risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

(CBS) - Consumer Reports finds well known hospitals may not always be the safest for surgery.

The magazine rated the surgical care at nearly 2,500 hospitals across the country.

But some of the nation's top hospitals fell short of many small hospitals when it came to complications and overall quality of care.

"It's very difficult for hospitals to be good at everything all the time and I don't think we should be surprised that sometimes reputation is all it's cracked up to be," said Medical Director, Consumer Reports Dr. John Santa.

Some big name hospitals that received low ratings questioned how the data was collected and compiled.

(CBS) - Workers who eat lunch at their desk may be more productive in the afternoon.

German researchers tested people who went out to lunch with a friend, and those who ate at work.

People who went out returned to work calmer, but they were also less alert and scored lower on cognitive tests.
