Fiery Big Rig Crash Shuts Down Freeway

Posted: Updated:

GRANDPRAIRE (CBSDFW.COM) - Both lanes of Hwy 161 at I-30W in Grand Prairie are shut down after a fiery big rig crash. The driver of the tractor trailer took the exit ramp from I-30W headed south bound on President George Bush Turnpike when it happened. The big rig slammed through a guardrail of an overpass and landed on the northbound lanes of 161. The explosion send debris flying across both side of the highway.

Witnesses said they saw a larger, black plume of smoke emanating from the burning big rig, which was carrying a load of tiles.

The driver of the 18-wheeler died at the scene.

"Call it an act of god there was nobody involved on the 30, nor as he was plummeting down to the 161 northbound or southbound, no other cars were involved," said Detective Lyle Gensler with Grand Prairie police.

Police haven't yet determined the cause of the crash.

"There's only one person that could answer that and he's deceased," accordingto Det. Gensler. "Several of the witnesses just indicated that the truck just veered of the side of the road and plummeted down to the 161 so were trying to piece that together."

Grand Prairie police tweeted  at 7:22 p.m. that the westbound lanes of I-30 had two to three lanes open, but both the northbound and southbound lanes of the Bush Turnpike would be closed "for an indefinite amount of time."

Police caution drivers to find alternate routes if they are headed that way. More than six hours after the fatal crash, crews were still cleaning up the accident site.
