International embassies close amid al-Quaeda threats

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Additional American Embassies in the Middle East and Africa closed Sunday. More are likely to follow that trend through the month.

So far 22 have closed in Muslim countries.

It could be one of the most credible threats against the US since 9/11.

"That is why everyone is taking this so seriously. In fact the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff called it extremely significant," said Texas Representative Michael McCaul.

Homeland security committee members say recent intercepted conversations from Al-qaeda and other terrorist groups have them on high alert.

"There has been an awful lot of chatter out there. chatter means conversations among terrorist about the planning that is going on. Very reminiscent of what we saw pre 911," said Georgia Senator Saxby Chambliss.

The specifics of the treats aren't clear, but it's enough for security leaders to take precautions to keep certain US embassies safe, by simply shutting them down.

"I think we know a lot more about the when not the where and you can tell that from the breath of the closures.  The when was very specific in terms of a Sunday," said Massachusetts Representative Adam Schiff.

The closing could affect Americans traveling abroad because embassies could be closed, and public transportation could be targeted.

Mark Ammons of Tyler said in the next year, he'll fly seven or eight more times. One of those trips will be overseas to Ireland, but he's not afraid.

"It is in the back of your mind, that there's much more of a risk, but I just believe in not worrying about it and I just say get me there," Ammons said.

As for the current threats against embassies in the Middle East and Africa, he just won't travel there.

"It's not fear it's common sense."
