Damaged gas meter shuts off county street for hours

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - After a few hours of work, Big Oak Bay Road in Smith County was reopened following a gas link break.

DPS investigators said a man fell asleep at the wheel of his truck and hit an above ground gas meter causing the leak around 3:25 Sunday afternoon.

The leak was so strong, crews had to shut down the road for repair work, and it caught neighbors attention.

"I could hear it spewing out sound like rushing water and you could smell the real strong smell of gas," said Diane Mathis who lives near the leak./

Atmos Energy crews still have to repair the leak, but they were able to shut off the valve and re-open the road drivers.
