Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - A new study finds children who have parents or older siblings who smoke are also more likely to smoke.

The research in the Journal Pediatrics finds up to about a third of children who grew up with smokers smoked in the past year.

Of the children with non-smoking parents, only 8 percent had a cigarette recently.

(CBS) - Pregnant mothers who indulge in high-fat, sugary diets may be more likely to have children who abuse drugs and alcohol.

Researchers at the University of Florida tested their theory on pregnant rats and their off-spring. The babies of rats on a high-fat diet drank significantly more alcohol in adulthood and had higher levels of fat in their bloodstream.

The babies of Rats on a high-sugar diet also drank more alcohol, weighed more and became over excited after taking low doses of amphetamines.

(CBS) - A new study by the American Academy of Pediatrics finds preschoolers who consume one or more sugary drinks a day are more likely to be overweight or obese.

The sugary drinks include soda, sports drinks or fruit juice that is not all fruit. Researchers found those same preschoolers also consumed less milk and were more likely to watch more than two hours of television a day.
