Two-a-days heat safety

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - It wouldn't be Texas football without two-a-days.

While most of us are trying to stay cool indoors this summer, East Texas football players are out on the field, gearing up for the start of the season.

Luckily, the players at TK Gorman are in good hands.

"We've all been trained on what to look for as far as heat illness- a kid that may be about to fall out- to get him to a trainer. And, we have a great medical staff as well to help us in that area." says head football coach Coby Gipson.

He says they'll provide cold towels, snacks, and plenty of shade.

"We want to be very cognizant of their time spent in the direct sunlight."

Although his staff is keeping a watchful eye, he says players need to help themselves too.

"You can't begin hydrating the Monday that practice starts. It's something that goes well beyond that."

Constantly pumping the fluids and looking out for your teammates.

"Don't try to be macho. Just tell coach if you're getting hot. You know, watch your fellow players if you see them getting hot. Remind them, 'hey get a drink.'"

Brenda Elrod with NET Health says when someone stops sweating, that's when they're at risk of a heat stroke.

"You can be permanently damaged for the rest of your life, if you don't take care of yourself. So, it's not just something- 'oh I just got too hot.'"

She says know your body and take care of it this summer to avoid a dangerous or deadly situation in the heat.
