NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) – You always hear about the most popular stolen cars and trucks, but did you know Texas boats are some of the most popular targets for thieves?

According to National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) reports, the Lone Star State ranks third in the nation in the number of boat thefts.

NICB spokesman Frank Scafidi says there has a three-percent decrease in thefts of boats. He had a theory about the decline. "It could be that the reason that thefts are down this year, like last year, is because the economy perhaps isn't allowing people to have that sort of disposable income that they've enjoyed in previous years."

Scafidi said thieves definitely have a preference. "Far and away every year what's most often stolen are jet skis, wave runners… the personal watercrafts." When it comes to jet skis and the like he said, "It's pretty hard to prevent, unfortunately, a jet ski from being stolen because literally it's pretty easy to pick up and maneuver."

Last year there were more than 400 watercrafts stolen in Texas and Scafidi said an improving economy could affect the count. "We may see these numbers pick up even more."

Only the states of Florida and California report higher boat theft numbers than Texas.  To keep their property safe boat owners are advised to take extra steps to secure their boats with locks and kill switches. Scafidi advised, "Provide as much security to your boat as you can. If you're gonna leave it at a transient dock someplace, disable it. Take the battery or do something."
