Rusk County schools join Campus Crime Stoppers program

HENDERSON/RUSK COUNTY (KYTX) - Rusk County schools are getting a new tool this fall in the fight to prevent crimes on campus.

The sheriff's office says every school in Rusk County has signed on for the Campus Crime Stoppers program. It says it's the best way to prevent crime from coming inside these school fences.

Fifty-two-year-old Overton parent Adolphus Green remembers when school security wasn't an issue.

"We didn't worry about people coming to school with guns or knives or things like that," Green said.

Times have changed -- and Rusk County wants to keep up.

"Shame on us if we don't do all that we can for the security of our children," West Rusk County Consolidated Independent School District Police Chief Paul Thompson said.

So Rusk County Sheriff Jeff Price and Sergeant David Roberts started Campus Crime Stoppers. The only cost is the reward money which Rusk County Crime Stoppers is handling. Students can submit a tip anonymously -- and get reward money if their tip prevents a crime.

"It's just like Crime Stoppers," Roberts said. "We don't want to know who they are."

And three Henderson businessmen donated the $7,800 needed to buy a k-9 officer to conduct drug searches on campuses.

"Once myself and Sheriff Price were able to go to the superintendents and the school boards and explain -- we're not getting in your business. We're going to help you know exactly what's going on on your campus," Roberts said.
