Tyler ISD school board approves designs for new & renovated schools

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - We're taking a look at what changes Tyler students can expect at their school in the next two years.

The Tyler ISD school board unanimously approved the designs for two elementary schools and the new career and technical Education center this week.

These are among the six projects included in the $160.5 million dollar school bond voters approved in May.

The renovated Rice Elementary school on Carriage Drive in Tyler is learning it's not bad to add a little color to your wardrobe.

Bold colors make up the school's exterior in these designs.

Rice Elementary is getting two new wings. One to replace the existing fifth grade wing and another that will house the gym, cafeteria, kitchen and music room.

The current entrance of the school will also be moved to the back to allow for the expansion of the office and better security.

"It looks like more space," said Dylan Facklam.

Dylan Facklam just finished up his last year at Rice. He said the school was in need of more room.

"Like for events, we didn't have very much space. We usually used the gym or cafeteria," said Facklam.

Dixie Elementary on Patton Lane will see the same renovations, except more classrooms will be added because it's a smaller campus.

The main entrance will be in the same spot, except it will be bigger

Tyler ISD Construction Manager Monte Robinett says construction will begin first on the new career and technical education center at the corner of Earl Campbell Parkway and Bennett Avenue.

"It's going to look like an office building, we're not building it to look like a school," said Monte Robinett.

School leaders say they want students to feel like they're already on the job they're studying for when they walk through the doors.

The three projects that still remain are the middle schools.

New Boulter and Moore middle schools will be built along with a new middle school in southwest Tyler.

The designs for those campuses will be presented to the school board August 22nd.
