Children are a Gift: Kendrick

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) – Kendrick is a few years shy of getting a drivers license, but he can handle a race car at Fire Mountain Amusement Park in Tyler with no problem.

"The ride was good! I liked how I beat the other drivers," he said with a smile.

"Kendrick is a sweet 14-year-old," said Ashley Gipson, with Child Protective Services.

He's also well-mannered and easy to get along with. "I like to play football and I like to run and I like to play games. I also like to swim and fish."

Gipson adds, "Just like your typical boys, he likes his video games and he loves being outside."

Right now he's just trying to make the most of his time in foster care. "It doesn't feel right, but you have to make it feel good," he said.

His past is causing him some trouble academically.

"If they are neglected in the home setting, you do see a developmental delay once they are in foster care." Gipson goes on to say, "And now we have to try to make up for what he didn't get while in the home setting."

Kendrick has also been moved to six different placements during his time in foster care.

"We know for every placement they move to, we lose a half a year of school," said Gipson.

So while Kendrick is in the 8th-grade, he functions right now at about a first-grade level. This young man is hoping a forever family will help him.

"I want a family that can help me with my work and I want a family that can help me go to college."

So he can reach his dream of becoming a police officer. "So I can help people and get the bad people in jail," he said.
