$45M Grant to Help Find PTSD Cure

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- Texas is now home to leading research on whether PTSD is a curable disorder.

Monday, the Department of Defense and VA agreed to provide the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio with $45 million for that research.

The clinical trials will develop programs to treat the largest percentage of service members possible to the point of recovery.

"At the end of this we hope to have developed the most effective treatments possible for individuals who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan to help treat their PTSD to the point where they can function as productive military service members or citizens contributing back to our nation," said Dr. Alan Peterson.

An estimated 12-17% of troops returning from wars in the Middle East are at a significant risk for PTSD.
