Carrier Tyler plant moving 102 jobs to Mexico plant

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) -  The Carrier Corporation has announced 102 jobs at the Tyler plant will be moved to Mexico at the end of September.

Tom Mullins with the Tyler Economic Development Council says that will leave around 250 to 300 remaining employees at the heating and technology plant, whose jobs will be phased out by the end of the year.

At one time, the Carrier Corporation had more than 1,200 employees in Tyler.

Over the years, layoffs have happened, dropping the workforce down to about 400 people.

In 2010, Carrier Corporate representatives told local leaders business had declined by 40%.

"I don't know what I'm going to do, because I'm right in the middle of an age where I don't want to be looking for a job," said Darren Hawks.

Workers, like Darren Hawks, who had been with the plant for 20 years learned in January of 2012 that their jobs were heading to Mexico.

"I thought it was a shame that again we're losing jobs to a foreign country," said Hawks.

It all comes down to dollars and cents for the Carrier Corporation. The company can save money by using labor out of Mexico.

"Some of the higher skilled position jobs might be transferable, but I'm not sure a lot of people are going to take advantage of them," explained Tom Mullins.

Tom Mullins with the Tyler Economic Development Council says as the jobs move out of East Texas, our local economy is affected.

"When that payroll goes away, they don't spend money. They can't spend money unless they get another comparable job in the area," said Mullins.

Stephen Lynch with Workforce Solutions in Tyler has been helping Carrier employees map out their future since the announcement of layoffs was made last year.

"What we're providing will be called rapid response services. We will host some orientations here at the center prior to their layoffs," said Stephen Lynch.

In September, the employees who will be laid off will learn what training or jobs may be available.

"We will go over all of their benefits. So, they will able to make good decisions about what they need to do," said Lynch.

A tough decision that many Carrier employees will have to make as they prepare to say goodbye to the only job they've ever known.

Out of the 102 employees who will be laid off, 67 of them volunteered. Most of the jobs lost will be assembly positions.

Companies locally and nationally have shown interest in buying the Carrier building.
