New mammal discovered by scientists

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) - For the first time in nearly four decades scientists say they have discovered a new animal.

The olinguito looks like a cross between a house cat and a teddy bear and is found in the forests of Columbia and Ecuador.

Smithsonian  scientists say it's an elusive creature related to the raccoon and only comes out at night.

"It's small it's not hunted very much and its mostly up in the trees because no ones had much of a chance to take a closer look no one's really understood what this animal is."

Scientists are planning a return to the Andes so they can learn more about the olinguito.
