UT Tyler grant goes towards after school program for middle school students

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) - The biggest grant in UT Tyler's history is going to an after school program called the University Academy .

The $11 million dollars, will help disadvantaged middle school students throughout East Texas.

The program helps them with homework while giving them access to activities like soccer and cooking.

One part of the program is about parent involvement, and another about college preparation.

"Latchkey kids that are going home really a little too young to be home by themselves, but there's not much for them, we really try to capture those kids."

"We found that as we were reaching these students we were seeing grade and behavior changes"

Since 2011 the program has been at Boulter, Dogan, and Stewart Middle School.

It will now be at Hogg, Hubbard and Moore Middle schools, Chapel Hill Middle School, Winona ISD, and Azelway Charter Schools.
