NISD board lowers tax rate and hears proposal on sharing technical training center

Posted: Updated:

NACOGDOCHES (KYTX) - Nacogdoches ISD taxpayers will see a decrease in school property taxes after the board of trustees on Thursday, Aug. 15, lowered the total 2013-14 rate from $1.37 to $1.3525 per $100 valuation.

Also on Thursday night, the board heard a proposal for sharing space and resources with the Nacogdoches Technical Training Center.

Trustees unanimously accepted the NISD administration's recommendation to lower the debt service tax rate from 20 cents to 18.75 cents per $100 valuation.

The maintenance and operations rate remains $1.17. The drop marks the first change in the overall tax rate since 2007-08 when the board lowered it from to $1.59 to $1.37 per $100 valuation.

Money raised through property taxes will fund nearly 45 percent of the district's 2013-14 operating budget of $46,335,666.

During the information-only portion of the evening, supporters of the Nacogdoches Technical Training Center presented a plan suggesting that NISD's Martin Center of Choice could relocate to the training center.

Ed Pool, representing the Nacogdoches Economic Development Corporation, made the presentation.

Established by Nacogdoches County, the technical training center is operated by Angelina College.

The proposal would have NISD pay $500,000 to finish out a 6,300 square foot portion of the building for use by the Martin Center. In return, the district could have access to as much as 15,000 square feet and receive direct access to the center's Angelina College technical training courses.

Angelina College programs currently offered there include fire academy and nurse assistant training and Panola College's petroleum technology courses.  Planned additions include culinary arts, welding and water quality treatment training.

Pool says NISD's participation could assist the district's efforts to meet new state legislation requirements.

NISD currently shares its facility housing the Martin School of Choice with Angelina College.

As an information-only item, no decisions were made or votes taken on the matter.
