Habitat for Humanity to build 100th home

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Habitat for Humanity of Smith County is on a mission to build its 100th home in 100 hours with 100 sponsors.

Construction is expected to start November 4th.

At $700, families, businesses and friends can help make this build possible.

The new homeowner says she can't wait to move in.

"I think I go over there just about every other day just to go look at it. I do, I do." she says.

An empty lot on North Spring Avenue and East Vance Street is about to be where Cheresa Monmouth and her two children call home.

"They were with me all the way on the journey and they are just as excited as I am." she says.

The Monmouths are currently living in a home from PATH, or People Attempting to Help.

She says they're ready to move somewhere permanent.

"We will have something to call our own."

Habitat for Humanity of Smith County CEO Jack Wilson says the move-in process is often emotional for new homeowners.

"I hand them their keys and everybody's hugging and crying. Kleenexes are going everywhere. It's a neat program."

But, he says it's not possible without help from the community.

"We know that the need to help people is so great and we can't do it alone. We need our donors and our people who support us so we can move forward."

To change the lives of people like Monmouth and her family.

"It means a lot." she says. "We've been through a lot."

She's calling this her dream home and says she couldn't be more grateful.

"We just want to show them that we thank them and we appreciate what they're doing for us."
