Boil advisory in Troup expected to last a week

Posted: Updated:

TROUP (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - Crews in Troup are currently working to fix a water main break, but officials said residents will be under a water boil advisory for about a week.

John Phillips, public works director, said the break is in an alley on north Railroad Street. He said most residents are currently without water and there is low pressure to the few with service. He said the break should be repaired in about an hour, but residents will need to protect themselves against microbes for the next week.

To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking, and making ice should be boiled and cooled prior to use, according to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

The water should be brought to a vigorous, rolling boil and then boiled for two minutes. In lieu of boiling, residents may purchase bottled water or get water from another suitable source, according to the agency.

Phillips said crews will have to refill the system and flush it out. From there the water's quality will have to be tested at a Tyler lab. He said the whole process takes about a week, but officials will notify customers when the water is safe for consumption.

Anyone with questions may contact Phillips at 903-842-3128.
