Community gathers for "back to school" prayer rally

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Before the school bell rings Monday morning at Birdwell elementary in Tyler, a group of teachers and staff members are walking the hallways, praying for students, their parents, and most of all, themselves.

"We really believe it's important and we believe it makes a difference," said Jan Thedford.

Before these teachers gathered at their school, they were at a downtown prayer rally in Tyler, worshipping with other teachers, parents, and students from across East Texas.

"Everybody watches the news and sees what happens and we live in a chaotic kind of world," said Travis White, organizer.

A world, he says, that can use prayer, especially as our children prepare to head back into the classroom.

"I think it's very important, prayer is an essential thing that keeps us connected to each other. It crosses all barriers, racial, economic, even age," added White.

In the Brownsboro and Chandler area, more than 50 people prayed for the school districts there. In Whitehouse, a prayer walk will take place this Sunday.
