Health Alert: Biological markers tell risks of suicide

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - A study from Indiana University finds biological markers in the blood may be a red flag for people at risk of suicide.

Researchers found the markers were significantly higher in people who took their own lives and in patients who have suicidal thoughts.

Doctors say the results could lead to a test psychiatrists can use.

(CBS) - New research finds genes that increase the risk of alcoholism may also be connected to eating disorders.

Doctors at the Washington University School of Medicine followed thousands of people and found a significant number of alcoholics also suffer from disorders like binge eating.

Scientists say physicians should be aware that the two conditions can occur together.

(CBS) - Researchers in Britain say pregnant women who use a midwife tend to have healthier babies.

The study looked at 16,000 moms to be and found those with a midwife were less likely to give birth early and had fewer complications during labor.

Researchers suggest more women should use midwives in combination with their doctor.
