Web Exclusive: Couple grants mom's dying wedding wish

Posted: Updated:

(CNN/WPXI) - As her dying wish, a woman in Pennsylvania wanted to see her son get married.
That wish was granted at the chapel at the hospital where she's being treated.

It's an extra special day just one week in the making. The traditional wedding takes a year or better to plan.  "It was like a blur," says Ashley Leighty Kern.  "Then I realized if were doing this I gotta, I have to do stuff. I have to get ready," says Adam Kern.

For Adam and Ashley, their gift -- Adam's mom getting to see the marriage. Anna Mae Kern of Donegal has fought breast cancer for seven years. She was in remission, but the cancer has spread to her brain. Fearing there's not much time left, Adam and Ashley made a decision.

"It would have been nice, it would have been beautiful wherever we had it.  But to have her here and for the hospital to be so nice, it worked great and it was awesome," says Adam Kern.

Before seeing his blushing bride, Adam nervously showed off the rings.  And he choked back tears describing the sacrifice made by Ashley to hold this special day in a hospital chapel.

Nurses and staff greeted the newlyweds with bubbles. An inspirational mom without much time to live received her dying wish to share this moment with her son.  "He has a lot of his mom in him. And he brightens my day whenever I saw him so, it's one of them things, I know we'll do great," says Ashley.

The couple was engaged last year, but didn't have a firm wedding date in mind until Kern got sick again.
