Staying on top of your child's immunization requirements

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Schools are in session in east Texas, and some parents are late getting their children vaccinated.

The first day of school in Tyler ISD, over 204 students missed class for not having the proper vaccinations.

While it may be hard to keep track of the list of needed vaccinations, you could face trouble if you wait too long to get your child vaccinated.

However the Texas Department of State Health Services has a special tool to help parents keep track.

School is in session , but 12-year-old seventh grader Scott Boswell isn't in class. He's waiting to get the four shots he needs for school.

"I don't like getting them, the needle part, I just don't like it," said Boswell.

Getting a shot is unavoidable, but it could have been done and over with a long time ago, but his mom Katie England forgot…

"I'm a little late this year," she said.

She's not the only parent that's late. Each year dozens of parents pour into the NetHealth clinic at the start of the school year getting those last minute vaccinations.

England is safe, but for those parents who continue to wait, could cost them more than a sick child. Add a $500 truancy ticket.

Missing school for no-vaccinations does not fall under the excused absence category.

The typical age range where children get immunizations is kindergarten and 7th grade, now that's long stretch of time to keep up with, well net health says there's an online tool to help parents keep track of your child's immunization records.

It's called ImmTrac. And is offered through the Texas Department of State Health Services.

"So you can get an immunization here, you can get it at your doctor's office and we all have access to that," said NetHealth spokeswoman Stephanie Taylor. She said the tool shouldn't replace parent responsibility.

"Always helpful for you to have your shot record especially if you've never been put into the Immtrac system and to keep track of it," Taylor said.
