JEFFERSON/MARION COUNTY (KYTX) - The Pride House, an ornate two-story Victorian home built in 1888 and believed to be the first bed and breakfast in Texas, burned down during the overnight hours this morning, a City of Jefferson employee said.

"It's heartbreaking," Kim Kimble, a lifelong Jefferson resident, said. "It's kind of like a fixture in town. It's going to be different (without it)."

No injuries were reported and a cause has not been determined. Officials and firefighters remain on the scene this morning.

The Pride House was built by lumberman George Washington Brown, and later purchased by John Griffin Bender. It was named Pride House after the son of the third family to own the home. Many of the family members who have lived in this home seem to have loved it so much that they have decided to stay, as there are many claims of paranormal activity in the home.

Kimble said the Pride House is the first known bed and breakfast in Texas and started Jefferson's revolution as a tourist destination. It is described as a well maintained Victorian home with nine beautifully decorated guest rooms, all with king or queen sized beds and private baths.
