Telco Credit Union warns of fraud attempt

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - A local credit union is urging its members to be aware of a text message sent saying the financial institution needs the member to call and give information to prevent their ATM card from being deactivated.

Betty Deweese, President and CEO of TELCO Credit Union, said the messages began today and members are being contacted to prevent anyone from being defrauded.

An email sent by TELCO to members reads as follows, "Please be aware that we have been notified by some members that they have received text messages stating their card has been deactivated and that they must call a local number to enter their 16-digit card number."

Ms. Deweese said the text message is coming from 903-452-9370 and the person is asked to call 903-686-0462. because "the card has been deactivated."Upon calling the number, the automated system announces that it is "Credit Union Services" and prompts the caller to enter their 16-digit card number.

"We don't send texts or email messages about someone's account, We would send them a message and have them call us, but would not enter information blindly," she said.

Ms. Deweese said at this time she is not aware of anyone providing their number, but she is asking anyone who have been a victim to contact TELCO immediately at 903-753-5588.
