Advice on brightening your landscape this summer

Posted: Updated:

Tyler (KYTX) -- Without a good drench lately, your yard may not be in the best shape right now. But watering your yard this time of year can be tricky.

"You really should be able to get by with watering about twice a week, maybe 3 times a week," James Wilhite, President of Wilhite Landscape, said.

Sometimes homeowners even over-do it in the summer and it backfires.

"Brown patches in your yard this time of year could be insects or diseases. And it may actually be from over watering," Wilhite said.

He recommends putting out a quarter to a half-inch of water each session and don't forget a good foundation.

"The soil has to be right for plants to thrive. This time of year when things are dry, you may have to moisten the soil," Wilhite said.

He says to choose your plants wisely keeping the Texas climate in mind.

"I love ornamental grass it does really well here. There's a new variety of this tall purple ornamental grass," Mary Wilhite, co-owner of Blue Moon Gardens, said.

Some drought-tolerant choices include old-fashioned Phlox, Rosemary, and another personal favorite.

"This is lavender, and it smells great," Mary said.

A bang for your buck is succulent plants. Things like cactuses are affordable and last years.

"A lot of succulents people pass on. It's an heirloom pass-along plant," Mary said.

Landscape professionals say they are seeing more customers cut back on the amount of grass in their yard, replacing it with mulch and other landscaping instead.
