Homer students dies abruptly; collapses while playing basketball

CLAIBORNE PARISH, La. (KTBS) - The town of Homer is mourning the loss of a student athlete.

Gekobe Hunter passed away Thursday.

Hunter was in the 11th grade at Homer High School.

Claiborne Parish School Superintendent, Dr. Janice Williams tells KTBS 3 News that Hunter was on the school's basketball team and a member of the Future Business Leaders of America.

Hunter was reportedly playing basketball when he collapsed, he died after being transported to the hospital.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as they endure this difficult time," said Dr. Williams.

Extra counselors are on the school's campus to help students cope with the loss of their classmate.

Homer Mayor Alecia Smith left the following message on her facebook page:

"The Homer High Basketball team and Homer High FBLA have lost a great Student. Gekobe assisted me with the back to school drive, just last week. Such a nice, jovial and respectful young man. May God bless the Hunter and Randle family in their time of sudden bereavement."

An exact cause of death of Gekobe Hunter has not been determined.
