Texas College wins $10K Home Depot grant to "retool" school

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Texas College has re-tooled the school. Students and faculty came together to beautify the campus with plants and fresh coats of paint for the Home Depot "Retool Your School" project.

CBS 19's Katiera Winfrey went to the campus to see how this project will create a better learning environment.

"What we are trying to do is improve the living learning environment," said college president Dwight Fennel.

They are doing that by doing campus yard work.

Tarneshia Burns is a junior at the college. She is one of dozens that showed up to help the school re-tool by painting, digging and planting.

"I think us coming here and building plants give us a better way to feel at home," said Burns.

Texas College was one of several HBCU's (Historically Black Colleges or Universities)  across the country selected for the Home Depot "Retool Your School" beautification initiative.

Over 70,000 Texas College supporters voted online to win $10,000 for campus improvement.

"It has a greater future, this generation and population who is endorsing this project is gonna share the message of what this college is doing," said President Fennell.

He said the amount of support speaks volumes of how important the school is in the community as well as in the student body.

"Their buy in into the project speaks highly of their value in their education," said Fennell

The main area of focus for improvement was the welcome center and social area near the cafeteria.
