City of Waco Sponsors Free Micro Chipping For Pets

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- On Sunday morning, hundreds of pet owners took advantage and lined up at the Animal Birth Control Clinic in Waco to get their cats and dogs microchipped for free.

The City of Waco sponsored the free clinic for residents to microchip their pets after passing a city ordinance last month that made microchipping mandatory for any pet inside Waco city limits. That ordinance, which also includes mandatory spaying and neutering will start being enforced by Animal Control in January.

In order for pet owners to get the free microchipping, they had to show a City of Waco water bill with their name on it proving they live in Waco.

"There was a lot of preparation for this week to get ready for today, but we could not anticipate the volume of people here," Kuehl said.  "It was awesome. I think the only problem we had was not enough parking."

This is the first time the City of Waco provided a free clinic for residents, hoping many would attend  in order to become compliant under the new ordinance.  Kuehl says they microchipped about 200 pets today, and estimates the cost at $2,000. She says the city will reimburse the clinic for the costs today.

This will not be the last opportunity for residents of Waco to take advantage of a free microchipping clinic. The City of Waco plans to sponsor more free clinic like this before January when tickets and fines will begin to be enforced.
