TYLER (KYTX) -

Candidate for Lieutenant Governor Todd Staples toured East Texas Tuesday trying to win the home-town vote.

"Folks I don't want the Texas of tomorrow to look like the California or the Illinois of today," he said to a crowd at Rusty Taco on Beckham Avenue in Tyler. "How about you?"

Staples talked about his new immigration plan, which he said secures the borders without granting amnesty.

"Texans are literally being chased off their property by violent drug cartels coming from Mexico and this president has really turned a deaf ear on our pleas for significantly enhanced resources," Staples said.

Right now, Staples is the state's Agriculture Commissioner.

He was a local politician in Palestine before he went to Austin to serve in the house and the senate.
