Health Alert: FDA orders stronger warnings on painkillers

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - The Food and Drug Administration wants stronger warning labels on prescription painkillers like Oxycontin and Vicodin.

The new label reminds doctors and patients the drugs can be deadly if misused and are only for patients in constant pain.

Abuse of prescription painkillers is up more than 12 percent.

(CBS) - The FDA is also considering fast approval for a drug that treats breast cancer in the early stages.

The drug called Perjeta is already used to fight breast cancer after it's spread to other parts of the body.

But a new study shows it can also be used soon after diagnosis, and is effective at shrinking tumors, making it easier to remove them during surgery.

On Thursday a panel of experts will review the evidence and advise the FDA.

(CBS) - New research highlights the power of a positive attitude.

Doctors in Denmark say optimistic people with heart disease are more likely to exercise and live longer.

The most positive patients were  42 percent less likely to  die. Physicians say exercise and a good mood improve blood flow to the heart.
