Update: Fire officials reveal cause of fire at Wise Elementary

Posted: Updated:

Update (KYTX): Officials with the Smith County Fire Marshal's office say they've determined the fire that canceled classes at Wise Elementary Thursday morning was a mechanical failure of the vent fan in a girl's bathroom.

"They did have problems with that fan yesterday and they were in there cleaning it, but they left the fans on at night,"Connie Wasson, Assistant Smith County Fire Marshal, tells CBS19.

Wasson says a call came in around 7 a.m. to the fire department, so students weren't even inside the building affected yet. The damage was contained to one bathroom and classroom, and administrators turned students away as a precaution due to the heavy smoke escaping that area.

Chapel Hill ISD Superintendent Donni Cook says the company ServPro has been charged with cleaning up the remains, and that the air is being tested by reps from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality before it's deemed safe for kids to go back inside.

Administrators fully expect classes to resume as normal tomorrow. Students and the teacher in classroom 216, where the fire started, will likely be moved to another room temporarily.
