Rusk County fatal wrecks in 2013 more than 10 times national average

Posted: Updated:

HENDERSON/RUSK COUNTY (KYTX) - An East Texas teacher is taking her don't text and drive message to the streets -- literally.

Anne Pool placed this wrecked vehicle outside her driving school on U.S. 259 North in Henderson in hopes that drivers will put down their cell phones. Since Jan. 1st, there have been 19 wrecks and 23 deaths on Rusk County roads, including seven deaths since July.

"Personally, I do think it's a lot of texting and driving and people using their cellphones.
I just personally see a lot of people doing that with their cellphones while they're driving.
So, I think our statistics in the future are going to show that," said Pool, who owns Henderson Driving School and teaches special education at Henderson Middle School.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says each year, 5 people die in crashes for every 100 thousand in the U.S., but Rusk County traffic deaths are already 10 times the national average. Pay Attention East Texas hopes to have the new Facebook page up and running by next week that will warn teen drivers of the dangers of distracted driving.
