Tyler Police investigate vehicle vandalism

TYLER (KYTX) -

More than one dozen cars and trucks were vandalized along neighborhood streets between 1:30 and 2:00 Friday morning. The damaged vehicles were spread across most of south Tyler.

"Come out to bring my trash can out and I walked around the corner to see both the mirrors were broke and the windows were broke and thought 'oh no,'" James McDermott said.

McDermott reported the incident to police and then started cleaning up the mess. His Camaro only had 1,300 miles on the odometer, and he wasn't planning on making any repairs anytime soon.

Three blocks down, Andrew Clinton was cleaning up his own mess.

"They didn't steal anything, which was fortunate, but I know there's been a lot of other incidents around the neighborhood," he said.

"We don't think the purpose was to steal," Tyler Police Officer Don Martin said. "We think it was just to do malicious damage."

"$1,000 in damage," Clinton said. "Just because they had ten seconds of boredom."

Martin said any information could help as long as it's reported.

"Someone driving slow in an area," he said. "A vehicle driving really fast getting out of an area. A group of kids that were acting stupid."

The people cleaning up the mess just want to know why.

"I don't know if it's Friday the 13th and they just wanted to do something crazy like this, or what," McDermott said.

"It's just senseless and that's the point of it, you know," Clinton said. "There's no rhyme or reason."

Martin said investigators believe whoever did this was driving a white Toyota Camry. Those investigators are hoping someone might have seen that car in any of the areas where the vandalism happened.

Martin urged anyone with cars parked along the street this weekend to try to move them into a driveway or into a garage.

Vandalism was reported at the following locations:

  1. 1012 Kingspark
  2. 1122 Kingspark
  3. 1309 Kingspark
  4. 1201 Riverbend
  5. 1305 Riverbend
  6. 1708 Wendover
  7. 1720 Wendover
  8. 714 W. Rieck
  9. 2911 Birdwell
  10. 2027 Montrose x2
  11. 1927 Montrose
  12. 1606 Sterling
