Ewell VFD needs Help Providing First Response Service to Area

Posted: Updated:

EWELL (KYTX) - Brenda Loi has lived in Ewell for 30 years. She says  if something catastrophic ever happens to her family waiting for help from another city could create more problems.
" It's nice knowing that you have somebody close. And someone doesn't have to come from Gilmer or Longview"
The Ewell VFD purchased this 75,000 dollar truck in August but it's not legal as an emergency response vehicle. Ewell VFD Spokeswoman Sharianna  Vanzant says the Department can't afford another 25,000 dollars needed to bring it up to speed.
"It is not legal yet, it is a minimal of a 20 minute drive from Gilmer when the first call is received"
Vanzant says that state funds were cut to volunteer fire departments in 2011 - making it tough to buy the additional emergency lights, medical supplies, and water pump needed to make this vehicle  legal.
"It'll have Oxygen tanks, Neck collars, backboards, splints, those sorts of things.'
To help raise money, the department has applied for grants  and will hold a fund raiser October 5th.
