East Texas city wants help from private companies on road repairs

Posted: Updated:

MARSHALL/HARRISON COUNTY (KYTX) - The City of Marshall is looking to Harrison County for guidance on its local roads.

City leaders want oil and gas companies to pay more for repairing streets used by heavy trucks. Harrison county has used a permit system since 1990 that bills companies for the materials needed to fix certain roads damaged by company trucks.

"We complain about the potholes every day I come to work," said Joseph Smith, who works at Marshall Tire and Lube. "I hear cars coming down every day hitting potholes. We need to get that stuff fixed, man."

Marshall city commissioners have asked municipal staff to draw up a recommendation that would mirror the county's policy. That recommendation will be considered at a future city commission meeting.
