East Texas woman's friend was in same building as navy shooter

(KYTX) - Helicopters evacuated victims from rooftops after shots rang out at the Washington Navy Yard Monday morning.

Former Arp resident Kyle Rahn's friend was there when it happened.

"I text her and I said are you ok, thinking she would be fine," said Kyle Rahn.

Rahn says her friend, Elizabeth Rosa, a mechanical engineer, wasn't ok.

She was in the building with the gunman and could hear the bullets as they flew through the air.

"She literally ran for her life," added Rahn.

Rosa was able to escape with some of her co-workers. but she wonders about those who weren't able to make it out.

"I was actually just texting with her just no, and she said, I have to turn the TV off, because they won't release any of the names," said Rahn.

Rahn said, Monday night, the city was still covered in secret service and law enforcement.

"I live right across the river in Virginia. Even when I came over the bridge, in the little suburbs area, there's secret service at every corner," said Rahn.

She says for the people of Washington, D.C., since the attacks on 9/11, this is a reminder of the constant fear they all live in.

"We don't live in the safest place in the world anymore. We don't," added Rahn.

The area where the rampage took place, known as building 197, was part of the headquarters for naval sea systems command, which buys, builds and maintains ships, submarines and combat systems.

About 3,000 people work at the headquarters, many of them civilians.
