School Bus Crash Investigation Ongoing

Posted: Updated:

There were around 60 children on a Bruceville-Eddy ISD school bus when it collided with a dump truck.

"They're very lucky that the injuries that were sustained is the way they are," said Bruceville-Eddy Police Sgt. Kenneth Proctor.

The crash sent 15 BEISD students and two staff members, including the bus driver and an aide, to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center with injuries.

Everyone but the bus driver, who crews had to free from the wreckage, has been released.

Investigators say the driver of the dump truck was traveling southbound on the Interstate 35 access road when he may have fell asleep at the wheel, crossed into the other lane and hit the bus head-on.

"The condition of the truck itself was a lot worse than the bus," said Proctor. "The bus held up pretty well compared to the dump truck."

The dump truck driver co-owns Second Stop Transport with his wife.

His wife did not want to speak on camera but told KCEN-HD News that her husband operates as a one-man band.

She said how thankful they are that everyone involved is OK.

Meanwhile, police say the driver continues to be cooperative.

In a statement released by BEISD Tuesday, Superintendent Richard ignore said, "The district's thoughts go out to all the students and staff involved, and our thanks go out to all the district employees, first responders and law enforcement agencies for their prompt and excellent service."
