Tyler CPA John Furlow enters the race for Smith County Judge

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Retired CPA John Furlow announced his run for Smith County Judge on Thursday during a speech at the Smith County Courthouse Annex.

"I'm not going to raise taxes," he said. "Raising taxes is not the answer because if the population doubles in the next thirty years and we raise taxes, we're the next California."

Furlow said he plans to implement a "true zero-base budget plan" for future budget years in which the county throws out the previous year's budget and re-justifies every dollar spent for the coming year. He said that would prevent bloat in the budget.

Furlow also called for a fleet management plan, accusing current leaders of using vehicles past their useful lives and spending too much money as a result.

Addressing the recent complaints of a portion of the conservative electorate in Smith County, Furlow promised to create and implement a 30-year business plan by which the county would be run. He also promised to implement a new salary plan for county employees with pay that is merit-based, rather than longevity-based.
