Streets in Tyler flooded, barricaded off; cars stalled in waters

Posted: Updated:

Tyler (KYTX) -- The downpours caused several streets in Tyler to be blocked off on Friday-- some drivers even needed to be rescued.

"We had probably 6 or 7 places throughout the city that were barricaded," Officer Don Martin, with the Tyler Police Department, said.

That includes Douglas and Front street where a car was almost fully underwater.

"The water came up so quick that people didn't heed the warning that maybe we shouldn't be driving through that. Then they got stuck, and their car stalled out," Martin said.

If that happens to you, try to get out on your own.

"If you can't get out, dial 9-1-1 and say you are submerged in your car," Martin said.

The rain also disrupted people going to the fair in Tyler.

Artie Hughs says she hadn't been to the fair in 23 years, and there were things she had to skip today.

"We used to go to the livestock building and have a turkey leg, but we didn't get to do that today. Maybe we will come back before the fair leaves," Hughs told us.

A traffic light was also out briefly at Hwy 271 and 155 North.
