Jacksonville-based EZO to close doors

Posted: Updated:

JACKSONVILLE,TX. (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) -  Jacksonville-based EZO Copper Products LLC will be shutting down, Human Resources and Safety Manager Angie Davis confirmed Tuesday.

The business, which manufactures heating and cooling components, is projected to have its last production day in late October or early November. Ms. Davis said the move is going to affect about 84 people, 10 of which were laid off last week.

She attributed the shut down primarily to Carrier Corp., its biggest customer, moving from Tyler.

"Everyone's (known) Carrier's going to move for several years now," she said. "We did get (other) customers, but not enough to supplement what we were going to lose."

She said she doesn't know all the details of how the closure will roll out. However, she did say that equipment will be moved to EZO's sister company in Monterrey, Mexico.

As far as employees, who were notified last week, there will be an onsite job fair, she said.

Ms. Davis said she thinks it's sad for employees because some have been at the Jacksonville location for up to 20 years.

"It's just a sad thing to see them have to go through this," she added.

Although EZO is closing, there are some new things going on in the Jacksonville community, including plans for Stage Stores Inc. to open a new distribution center at the old Astro Air, Ms. Davis said. The new distribution center is expected to bring as many as 100 jobs to Jacksonville in its first year, a board member with the Jacksonville Economic Development Corp., said in May.

JEDCO President Darrell Prcin said another company, which makes automotive parts, has purchased the old TallyHo Plastics building, with an estimated start of about 10 to 15 employees.

As for the EZO facility, there are no formal plans, Prcin said. But Ms. Davis said she hopes EZO can be used for something else in the future.

EZO Copper Products was known as Snoke Special Products before Snoke was purchased in 2010 by Mexico-based company Manufacturas Especializadas, S.A. (MESA). Its name was then changed to EZO.
