We live in the South, so some of us may have a Southern accent, but would you consider saying "goodbye" to "howdy, y'all"?
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee was going to offer a speech class for its workers next month to do just that, until it got canceled.

Tyler (KYTX) -- We're highlighting an East Texas Food Bank program that deals with the young at heart. CBS19's Jaime Gerik has more on "Senior Servings."

Miss Lorene Steele just celebrated another birthday-- she's 92 years young.

"I'm blessed to be here," Steele, a recipient of Senior Servings, said.

Steele will tell you she doesn't leave the house often.

"I'm getting older, I can't get around too good. I get around with my stick," Steele said.

And Monday through Thursday, using that stick, she greets some familiar faces at her door.

"On Mondays and Wednesdays there's a couple, husband and wife, they are real friendly," Steele said.

Through a partnership with Meals on Wheels, volunteers bring Steele an extra sack. It helps get her through the weekend.

"They're delivered on Friday, and the intention is to fill that gap where they don't have meals delivered to them as they are mostly home-bound Seniors," Dennis Cullinane, Executive Director of the East Texas Food Bank, said.

250 people are enrolled in Senior Servings. It was developed by the East Texas Food Bank after Meals on Wheels drivers noticed a trend.

"On that Friday, there was nothing left for the weekend. The Seniors were sometimes dividing that Friday meal and holding it for Saturday, and we just didn't think that was acceptable," Cullinane said.

From there, Seniors hand-picked as needing these meals started receiving canned goods and other non-perishable food.

Steele is happy to get nourishment for her body, and for the company she has like her great-granddaughter, to keep her heart full too.

CBS19 and the East Texas Food Bank are holding a one-day food drive Thursday, Sept. 26th at Walmart on South Broadway in Tyler, 4th St. in Longview, Daniel McCall Drive in Lufkin.

All donations will go back to the food bank to feed hungry East Texans.
