Van Zandt County murder suspect back in jail on unrelated charge

Posted: Updated:

VAN ZANDT COUNTY (KYTX) -  A man recently indicted on capital murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon is back in jail on an unrelated charge.

An email from the Van Zandt County District Attorney's office reveals Larry Maples was indicted yesterday for Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Child under 14 years of age.

The email mentions Maples was arrested in district court today when he showed up for his court date.

He is currently being held on a $500,000.00 bond on that charge.

Larry Maples allegedly shot his wife, Heather, in March after finding her in Moses Clemente's bedroom.

He's also accused of shooting Clemente in the chest.

Clemente said he was engaged to Heather before she met Maples, and they were just friends at the time of the shooting.

Maples was held for 90 days after the shooting, but since he hadn't been charged at that point, he had to be let go.

For several months, Clemente stood with Heather's family to put Maples back in jail.

In July, Maples was indicted by a Van Zandt County grand jury on capital murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

He was arrested and later released after posting a $100,000.

About two months later, he's in jail again, accused of sexually abusing a child under the age of 14.

"It makes me feel safe to be able to do life normally," said Moses Clemente.

Clemente told us by phone Thursday he's glad to know Maples is back in jail. But, he still lives in fear Maples could post bail again.

"I still feel there is something wrong with our system, because this man has charges..you name it, he's got them all," said Clemente.

We're still working to find out the details around the sexual abuse charge.

Sources close to the investigation tell us the sexual abuse happened before the death of Larry Maple's wife, Heather.
