TYLER (KYTX) - A food drive benefiting the East Texas Food Bank and thousands of East Texans who need help fighting hunger.

These donations, like canned good and even money, go right back into stocking the shelves at the food bank.

And where this looks like a lot of food, there are hundreds of thousands of east Texans who could go without a meal.

Most of them are kids.

And that's the food bank helps put together programs to keep kids fed.

Every time Kobe and Keiasjah Warthsaw open their backpack for the weekend, they take home meals to help keep them fed.

"Canned good, milk, cereal, juice, jello and canned good are like beans and rice," says Kobe.

"I like the juice and cereals," says Keiasjah.

The backpack program provides about 150 kids at Douglas Elementary with the nutrition they need when they leave school for the weekend.

"We would be hungry," says Keiasjah.

"If we were able to provide it at the campus level who provides it at home level and sometimes are working and that's understandable," says Douglas Elementary principal Christy Roach.

Roach has seen the program grow.

But it's that same need to stop hunger in it's tracks that's led to the East Texas Food Bank partnering with other agencies to start the summer food program as well as the kids cafe.

"When they're out of school, they really, the parents are not often in a position to shoulder the burden of replacing those meals financially," says Dennis Cullinane, the executive director for the food bank.

Cullinane says the summer food program passed out 120,000 meals last summer.

And kids continue to receive snacks through programs at the kids cafe partnered with the Boys and Girls Club, the YMCA and other organizations.

"Really accentuates the need they have to make sure they have nutritional base they need in order to complete their education," says Cullinane.

"To me, it feels like, it's good to try to help kids be healthy and stuff," says Kobe.

Those programs run throughout the year, and that's just one part of what the East Texas Food Bank does to help fight hunger in East Texas.

They've been taking donations here at Walmart all day, and will be out here a little longer.

Of course you can always take donations to their offices in Tyler.
