Remember Me Thursday

Posted: Updated:

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - Oliver has spent the last 2 weeks in this 10 by 10 pen. He's been waiting for someone to choose him out of the 130 animals waiting to be adopted at the Humane Society of Northeast Texas.  Shawna Holmes is trying to find a companion for her son..
"My son loves playing outside, and I want someone their beside him at all times."
Oliver wasn't a match. And sadly his two weeks are up Friday. He'll be put down unless someone adopts him before noon. Adoption coordinator Karina holmes says it's a sad reality.
"There are just so many unwanted pets in Gregg County, that unfortunately we do have to euthanize them."
The shelter says in the month of July, it's save rate was an all time low of 42%. The shelter took in 800 animals but had to euthanize 464.
"The shelter says these guys have 2 weeks to find homes, and if they aren't adopted, they are euthanized."
The Humane Society, Fete for Pets, and All Hearts for Paws are spreading the word about adoption through Remember me Thursday.
"We want to shine a light on the need for adoptions, and shine a light in memoriam for those lost"
As part of an awareness campaign for pet adoption,  the organizers of the nationwide event tried Thursday to get as many people as possible to light virtual candles online.
