FROM: TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH

(TYLER PAPER) - Tyler will be getting a second IHOP restaurant next year.

Phillip Slyby, vice president of real estate and construction for IHOP franchisee ACG Texas Restaurants, said Wednesday that the company was "mobilized" and there was a general contractor on the 1.5-acre undeveloped site at 209 SSW Loop 323, at the west corner of Elm Street and the loop.

He expects the restaurant to be completed in February.

"It's a strong retail area that's growing," Slyby said of why they chose the location for the new restaurant. He said they also felt it was good to be located on the loop, which facilitates traffic around Tyler.

"We think it will do well," Slyby said.

The new IHOP will be about 4,600 square feet with 194 seats. He expects them to employ about 60 to 75 people, he said.

Slyby said they try not to position their restaurants close to existing IHOPs.

The original Tyler IHOP, which is owned by a different company, is about eight miles away on South Broadway Avenue and Loop 323, he said.

In February, ACG Texas Restaurants opened an IHOP off Interstate 20 in Lindale. He said the store is a little smaller, with about 40 employees, and has been really successful.

In March, representatives from ACG Texas Restaurants reported that the Lindale restaurant had the "strongest and most successful opening" of all its 66 IHOPs at the time, according to a prepared statement.

Dallas-based ACG Texas Restaurants formed in 2003 and is the largest IHOP franchisee, with 250 of the restaurants in Texas, Florida and in several states throughout the Northwest, Slyby said.

It has 67 IHOPs in Texas, with the most recent one opening last week in El Paso. They have the franchise rights to 143 counties in Texas, as well as the state of Florida.

Slyby, who has been with the company for seven years, said they plan to continue to open additional IHOPS in East Texas.

"It's been a good market for us," he said.

ACG Texas Restaurants is also the second-largest franchisee of Applebee's, owning 110 of the restaurants in the San Antonio area, Florida and Georgia.

EBCO General Contractors, of Cameron, is listed as the contractor for the IHOP construction project in Tyler on the building permit filed with the city.
