Power outage forces Winona ISD to close early - KYTX CBS 19 Tyler Longview News Weather Sports

Update: Power restored to Winona ISD, residents

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: As of 12:05 p.m., SWEPCO reports power was restored to 377 customers in the Winona area, and that includes all campuses in the school district.

A SWEPCO spokesperson tells CBS19 the power outage happened around 9 a.m. off Hwy 155 south of Big Sandy. That spokesperson explains a contractor was working on road construction and knocked down some trees in the process. They fell over and hit nearby power lines.

Administrators in Winona made sure students had some food in their stomachs before they left for the day, improvising with no electricity.

"We got with our cafeteria staff and they said we have cheese sticks, fruit and some crackers so we ran everybody through and gave them a chance to eat before we put them back on the bus," Denise Shetter, Winona ISD Superintendent, said.

Classes will resume on schedule Tuesday.
